New Work
I work with figures and storytelling in my work. The human has told the story of being human since the first cave paintings found in caves and shelters dating back to the Ice Age (Upper Paleolithic), roughly between 40,000 and 14,000 years ago.
The frescos in Danish churches were created between 1100 and 1600, during the time of Catholicism. They survived destruction during the Reformation of 1500-1600 but were later whitewashed and covered up as a pure white church became the trend. At the end of the 1800’s and as a result of renewed interest, they were uncovered and restored.
Here are some examples:
Your new paintings are beautiful, Elizabeth. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙏🏻
These are very cool, Elizabeth — and they certainly evoke the Danish church frescoes that inspired them. What an intriguing mix of mediums, too.
Thanks Jan 🤗
Love this new work! Do you actually crush oyster shells ? And what do you glue them with?
I have bought crushed oyster shells bagged from a nursery in California. Trying to find something similar here in Denmark. Looks like it exists and is used to feed chickens to strengthen their egg shells. I mix the shells with either gesso or first layer of paint.
Thanks for liking them 😁
Such a great idea!
I suppose they have a subtle shine to them, which can’t be seen in the photos. Or does it get lost when mixed with the gesso?
Those frescos are wonderful. And I like your modern rendering. 👍🏻
